Flashcard game for engaging second language learning through spaced repetition methodology

What is CueQ?

CueQ is a flashcard game designed to make learning a second language engaging and effective through the use of spaced repetition methodology. This method optimizes memory retention by presenting flashcards at strategically increasing intervals, ensuring that learners review material just before they are likely to forget it.

Game Setup

Players start by creating or selecting a deck of flashcards tailored to their language learning goals. Each flashcard features a word or phrase in the target language on one side and its translation on the other. The deck can include various categories, such as basic vocabulary, phrases, grammar points, or thematic sets like travel or business language. The game allows for the incorporation of multimedia elements such as audio pronunciations, example sentences, and images, providing a richer context for each term.

Learning Sessions

The learning process begins with an initial review session where players are introduced to a batch of new cards that can be organized with progressive levels and thematic tags. For each card, players must recall and provide the correct translation. Upon flipping the card, they self-assess their recall accuracy. Correct answers schedule the card for a review at a later time, while incorrect answers bring the card back sooner, ensuring that it is reviewed more frequently until the learner has mastered it.

The following learning sessions are included:

Review Mode: Standard review of flashcards with spaced repetition.

Lightning Round: Fast randomized review of one card side without tracking intervals

Practice Mode: Freeform practice without tracking intervals.

Spaced Repetition Algorithm

The core of CueQ is its sophisticated spaced repetition algorithm. This algorithm adjusts the review intervals based on the player’s performance. Cards that are consistently answered correctly will have their review intervals extended, reinforcing the material just as the learner might be about to forget it. Conversely, cards that are frequently answered incorrectly will reappear more often, providing the necessary repetition to solidify memory.

Because spaced repetition prioritizes reviewing cards at optimal intervals, learners can achieve better results in less time. This efficiency means that even short study sessions can be highly productive, making it easier for learners to fit language practice into their daily routines.

Learning on the go

CueQ can be accessed on any mobile device using the user’s Google login. Designed with a user-friendly interface, CueQ is easy to navigate on small screens. Learners can effortlessly flip cards and move between different sections of the app with simple tapping gestures. As a Progressive Web App (PWA), CueQ functions without an internet connection, ensuring seamless progress tracking by syncing data once the device is back online.

Progress Tracking and Motivation

CueQ includes comprehensive progress tracking features. Learners can view detailed statistics such as the number of cards reviewed, accuracy rates, and time spent studying. This data helps learners identify strengths and areas needing improvement.

Interactive and Customizable Features

The game also supports customization and interaction. Learners can create their own flashcards, allowing for personalized content that matches their specific learning needs. Teachers have access to advanced setup features to create and share flashcard sets with their students.

Multi-language Support

Each flashcard can display the word or phrase in the target language along with its translation in the learner’s native language. Any writing script can be used such as English, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, or Chinese. Additionally, audio features provide correct pronunciation, helping learners develop their listening and speaking skills.
