WordQ 5 for Windows Support

General FAQ

  • WordQ by design interacts with the physical keyboard buffer, not all OSK’s interact with this system function. Operating system updates continually change the interaction between OSK and the main system functions. WordQ may or may not work with an OSK.

  • WordQ 5 offers an integrated PDF feature. However, WordQ requires that PDF documents be accessible, that is, they must have underlying readable text. If you create a PDF document by scanning, be sure to turn on the option on your scanner (which may be a school copier for example) to create searchable text, which will make it accessible.

  • You may see the message “Unable to read the selected text. Your application may not support this feature.” You must first highlight the text in the document and then press the Read button.

  • The font size in the prediction box is smaller than the document text. Choose a larger font in the prediction box to match the document font. The box automatically positions itself with respect to the text depending on its font size.

  • This is an application limitation. It is recommended to set the prediction window to "Leave in Place”.

  • The trial software is the same as the full product, except it expires after 30 days unless you purchase a license. You can activate an expired trial at anytime, even if it's past the initial 30 days.

  • This issue is common on a touchscreen computer which typically has the DPI settings increased. You may set the DPI back to 100% in the control panel and this should resolve the issue.

  • The topic list import requires a hard carriage return as a delimiter. It is recommended that you create topic lists in Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (MacOS) to avoid this complication.

  • You can use WordQ to read a printed textbook or some other source. To do this you will need to scan the book with a scanner that has Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capability. OCR converts the photo that the scanner takes into text that programs like WordQ can read.

Once you have the text file that the OCR program created, open it in a word processor, like Microsoft Word or Notepad and use the "Read" feature in WordQ to have it read back to you.

  • * There are a few ways to type numbers. If you have a numeric keypad on your keyboard, typing on it will put in numbers rather than predicting words. At Options->Prediction-> Selection you can also reverse this, so that it is the keyboard that puts in numbers and the numeric keypad that makes word selections.

    * Another option is to pause the word prediction to put in numbers. You can hit the F9 key to turn off word prediction, then type the numbers, and then F9 again to turn it back on.

    * If typing numbers is a real problem, you can go to Options->Prediction->Selection, and turn off selection by number and just use the mouse or arrow keys to pick what word you want to use.

  • Starting WordQ PC Desktop v.5.4.25 in Exam Mode via Command Line Switch

Important: Please note that these instructions differ from the previous command line instructions for entering exam mode automatically on startup. In previous versions of WordQ, the "x" and "w" options disabled the indicated features when present. Starting in version 5.4.25 dated 11-Nov-22, the behaviour is reversed: the "x" and "w" options now enable the corresponding features.

The command line parameters to turn on exam mode are as follows:

    /e<1..9>[x][w]

This should be interpreted as "/e" followed by a number between 1 and 9, which represents the number of hours that WordQ will be in exam mode; optionally including "x" which when present enables usage examples (including user-modified usage examples); also optionally including "w" which when present enables user added words).

    Some examples are:

"wordq.exe /e2" -this will start WordQ in exam mode for 2 hours, disabling both word usage examples, and user added words.

"wordq.exe /e4xw" -this will start WordQ in exam mode for 4 hours, enabling both word usage examples and user added words.

If a mistake was made in the command line, WordQ returns value of "1" (one). For example "wordq.exe /ex" will cause wordq to fail, returning 1 (because there is no number indicating how many hours exam mode should be set to). This can be tested by running a batch file with the following lines:

    "wordq.exe /ex

    echo %ERRORLEVEL%"

PC Windows FAQ

  • When installing/updating WordQ you may get a warning that Windows 10 Defender is preventing WordQ from being installed as it is “from an unrecognized developer."

    1. Go to Options > Windows Security > App & Browser Control

    2. You may turn off the warn options to install WordQ and once installed, turn them back on.

  • WordQ 5 is partially compatible with Google Docs and Open Office. It will work, except that WordQ is unable to do "in context prediction" in the middle of words that you have already written. Thus, if you go backwards into your text it cannot make predictions based on what is there.

  • Once the text is automatically highlighted, press Spacebar to begin reading the text. Spacebar acts as a Play/Pause button. You can also use the arrow keys to step through the text. Click anywhere with the mouse or press Esc to exit Read mode.

  • WordQ 5 has been updated to address some situations where it locks up in Windows 11. You can update to the latest WordQ 5 from WordQ’s Options>Help>Check for updates…

  • WordQ in Windows S is not supported. Use Windows Home or Professional instead.

Switching out of S mode is one-way. If you make the switch, you won't be able to go back to Windows 10 in S mode. There's no charge to switch out of S mode.

    1. On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

On your PC running Windows 11 in S mode, open Settings > System > Activation.

    2. In the Switch to Windows 10 section, select Go to the Store. (***If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.***)

In the Switch to Windows 11 section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.)

    3. On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.

  • The error 5 message is usually because of insufficient access privileges to setup.exe. When you unzip the installation package, the destination is typically the user's temp folder. You can see the intended destination in the box that appears after downloading (the one with the unzip button). To fix it, create an empty folder (e.g., WordQInstallFolder) somewhere that the user has access such as the desktop, and then change the unzip destination to that folder before clicking unzip.

  • There may be several reasons why speech recognition appears not to work. Having a good quality microphone (ideally a USB headset - not earbuds) that is placed properly close to your mouth is essential. Please read complete documentation on using speech recognition in the WordQ User Guide located under Options > Help. Note that WordQ’s speech recognition does not use cloud computing for recognition.
